There are a few rules:

To be qualified to stand for co-option you must be a Commonwealth Citizen, or Citizen of the Republic of Ireland, or a Citizen of another Member State of the European Community, and be aged 18 years or over.  And, to qualify for co-option as a Community Councillor Applicants must:-

  • be an elector of the parish, or
  • during the whole of the last 12 months have occupied as owner or tenant land or other premises in the parish, or
  • live within 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) of the parish boundary

You cannot stand for election if you:

  • are subject of a bankruptcy restriction order or interim order.
  • have, within 5 years before the day of the election, been convicted in the United Kingdom of any offence and have had a sentence of imprisonment (whether suspended or not) for a period of over 3 months without the option of a fine.
  • You work for the council you want to become a councillor for (but you can work for other local authorities, including the principal authorities that represent the same area)
