Behind the Stones is a joint project of the Crickhowell District Archive Centre, the History Society, and others, to reveal the personal stories behind the names recorded on the Cenotaph and other memorials . It is part of the national commemoration of the start of the First World War and includes the casualties of all eight parishes which at the time were served by Crickhowell Rural District Council: Crickhowell, Cwmdu, Llanbedr, Llanelly, Llangattock, Llangenny, Llangynidr and Partrishow.
THE FALLEN OF THE CRICKHOWELL DISTRICT IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR
One objective is to recover fading recollections of these men before they are completely lost. This September (13-14th) there will be an exhibition in the Clarence Hall in Crickhowell on the impact of the war on the district, which will include a section on the war dead. After that a book will be published which will also feature brief lives, with photographs if available, of all on the list above (and others if found).
To go beyond the bare facts available on the Internet family memories are needed, and in particular photographs. Many of their families may well have left the Crickhowell area, but it may be possible to trace their location.
If you can help in making contact with families, or know of anyone who can help the project in any way, please get in touch !
